Chiropractic Care for Colic & Fussy Babies in Oconomowoc, WI
You've tried everything. You've bounced, shushed, swaddled, and driven around the block at midnight. Your baby is fed, dry, and exhausted — and still crying. If this sounds familiar, you are not alone and you are not doing anything wrong.
Colic is one of the most common and most distressing things a new parent can face. And while it's often dismissed as something babies just grow out of, there is usually something deeper going on — something that can be assessed and addressed.
At Essence Family Chiropractic, we look at colic through a nervous system lens. Because more often than not, a fussy, inconsolable baby is a baby whose nervous system is stuck in overdrive.
What's Actually Going On With a Colicky Baby
The birth process, even a straightforward one, places significant physical stress on a newborn's spine and nervous system. Interventions like forceps, vacuum, prolonged pushing, or a fast delivery can add additional strain. When tension accumulates in the upper cervical spine or the nervous system becomes dysregulated, babies have no way to tell you except by crying.
A dysregulated nervous system affects everything: digestion, sleep, feeding, comfort, and the ability to calm down. What looks like colic on the outside is often a nervous system that simply cannot shift out of a heightened stress state.
How We Assess Your Baby
Before we do anything, we listen. We want to know your birth story, your baby's patterns, and what you've already tried.
Then we run an INSiGHT nervous system scan. This non-invasive, no-radiation technology gives us a clear picture of how your baby's nervous system is functioning and where tension or stress may be showing up. It takes the guesswork out and gives us a specific, objective starting point for care.
From there we build a care plan tailored to your baby, not a generic newborn protocol.
What Chiropractic Adjustments Look Like for a Baby
We know this is the question every parent has. Adjustments for infants are nothing like adjustments for adults. There are no loud pops or forceful movements. The pressure used is about the same as you would use to test the ripeness of a tomato — gentle, specific, and targeted to the areas where tension is being held.
Most babies relax during or immediately after their adjustment. Many fall asleep on the table. Parents often tell us it's the calmest their baby has been all week.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is chiropractic safe for a newborn or infant?
Yes. Infant chiropractic care is gentle, specific, and uses very light pressure. Dr. Kate has completed advanced perinatal and newborn training through The Perinatal Experience and works with babies from their first days of life.
How soon can I bring my newborn in?
As soon as you feel ready. Many families bring their babies in within the first few days or weeks after birth. The sooner we can assess the nervous system, the sooner we can support your baby's comfort and development.
How many visits will my baby need?
That depends on what we find in the INSiGHT scan and your baby's specific presentation. We will give you a clear care plan after the first visit so you know exactly what to expect.
What if my baby cries during the visit?
That is completely okay and very normal. We move at your baby's pace. If they need a break, we take one. Our goal is for both you and your baby to feel safe and supported from the moment you walk in.
Can colic just go away on its own?
Sometimes symptoms do resolve over time, but the underlying nervous system tension that caused them often does not. Addressing the root cause early supports not just comfort now but healthy neurological development long term.
Your baby deserves to feel comfortable. You deserve to feel confident.
If your baby has been crying for hours and nothing is working, we would love to help. Start with a New Patient Exam and INSiGHT nervous system scan and let's find out what your baby's nervous system is telling us.
